Memory
A feature that lets a chatbot remember things about you even after a conversation ends. It brings convenience — and a privacy debate — along with it.
In plain words
It's a feature where the chatbot keeps information about you — your job, your preferences, what you're working on — even after the chat is closed. Turn it on, and phrases like "that project from last time" start to make sense. It's the shift from a customer service rep who meets you fresh every time to a regular shop clerk who already knows you.
It's also exactly where convenience and privacy collide head-on. That's why services provide a management screen where you can view, edit, or delete what's been remembered. It's worth opening that screen at least once, just to see what the chatbot thinks it knows about you.
Try it yourself
- Check your chatbot's settings to see if the Memory feature is turned on.
- Tell it something like: "I'm a working parent with a kid in elementary school. Keep that in mind when you suggest meals."
- The next day, start a new conversation and just ask, "What should I cook for dinner?" If the answer reflects what you told it before, memory is doing its job.
Context Window vs. Memory Feature: What's the Difference?
Whether it persists after the conversation ends, How much you can read at once
Both get described as "the AI remembers," but one is only valid within the current conversation while the other carries over to the next one. Forgetting the beginning of a long conversation is a context window issue; the AI knowing your name today after you mentioned it yesterday is a memory feature.

Rule of thumbIf it disappears when you close the chat window, it's the context window; if the AI still knows it in a new conversation, it's the memory feature.
