AMD

AMD is a company that makes the chips that act as a computer's brain. Founded in 1969, it's long been known as Intel's competitor. In the AI era, it's more often called NVIDIA's rival instead.

When AMD shows up in an AI story, it's not about models. AMD doesn't build chatbots or image generators — it builds the hardware that runs them. That hardware line is called Instinct.

Because NVIDIA is so far ahead, AMD news usually gets framed as "is an alternative emerging?" If AI companies rely on chips from just one supplier, they lose bargaining power on price, so big customers have started deliberately setting aside orders for AMD as well.

Going into 2026, the software barrier is coming down too. llama.cpp, a leading tool for running models on personal PCs, has added AMD's software platform (ROCm) as an official build target — a sign that the old assumption of "it has to be NVIDIA" is starting to loosen, beginning with local AI.

"OpenAI is deploying AMD chips at scale" — this doesn't mean OpenAI invested in AMD. It means OpenAI agreed to buy AMD's hardware to run its models on.
