Anthropic

Anthropic is the company that makes Claude. It was founded in 2021 by seven people who left OpenAI, and siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei serve as CEO and President, respectively. The company is headquartered in San Francisco.

The most common misunderstanding is about ownership. Amazon and Google have poured huge sums into Anthropic and also supply its servers, which leads some articles to claim "Amazon makes Claude." But Anthropic alone builds Claude. Amazon is an investor, a landlord renting out computing power, and also a storefront that resells Claude on its own cloud. All three things are true, but none of them amount to "making" Claude.

The confusion runs the other way too. Anthropic doesn't build on top of anyone else's model. Instead, it lists Claude for sale across Amazon's, Google's, and Microsoft's clouds side by side—but that doesn't turn those cloud companies into developers of the model.

As of August 2026, Claude's latest generation is Opus 5 and Sonnet 5, with Fable 5 sitting above them. The company is preparing for an IPO and meeting with investors, and has secured a $15 billion financial guarantee from Google. To reduce its reliance on NVIDIA, it has built its own in-house AI chip design team, and it has made watermarking—which lets third parties verify text written by Claude—mandatory worldwide.

"You can use Claude on Amazon Bedrock" — this doesn't mean Amazon made Claude; it means Amazon put a model built by Anthropic on its own shelf.
