Meta AI is the AI organization at Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram. It made its name with Llama, a model whose defining trait was that anyone could download and use it freely. That openness let developers around the world build their own models on top of Llama.

In 2026, the company took a sharp dip and then recovered. When its ambitious Llama 4 fell short of expectations, Meta briefly leaned toward not releasing new models publicly at all. Then in August, Zuckerberg himself admitted the failure, saying "that wasn't Llama 4," and released the successor model, Muse, as open source again. The model's label switched from Llama to Muse.

Muse isn't a single model but a family. It includes a 30-billion-parameter model (Muse Glimmer) released for running agents on personal computers, and Muse Code, a coding agent that works in the terminal, among other siblings. The sentence "Meta released Llama" is now past tense — the star of new articles is Muse.

The organization's naming is also confusing. "Meta AI" is both the name of the research organization and the name of a chatbot product, while the team actually building the large models is a separate unit within it. Readers need to figure out from context which one an article is referring to.

"Meta open-sourced Muse" — the successor to Llama. Since August 2026, the name of Meta's new models is no longer Llama but the Muse family.
