On-device AI

Most AI you use today doesn't actually run on your phone — it runs in a faraway data center. Your question travels to a server and the answer travels back. On-device AI removes that round trip and runs the AI directly inside your phone or laptop.

There are three benefits: it works without internet, it responds instantly, and most importantly, your data never leaves the device. That's why on-device processing matters most for privacy-sensitive features like searching your photo gallery or summarizing calls.

The catch is that a phone's chip is far smaller than a data center's GPU, so it needs small, efficient models. Articles about "AI built into Galaxy or iPhone," or about Apple, Qualcomm, and Samsung's "AI chips (NPUs)," are all part of this trend. Big models run on servers, small errands run on the device — mixing the two into a hybrid is the current mainstream approach.

"New smartphone supports real-time translation without a server connection" — this means the translation model runs directly on the phone. The word "privacy" often shows up nearby.

1. Switch your phone to airplane mode — this cuts off internet access.
2. Try AI features one by one: the eraser and retouch tools in your photo app, keyboard autocomplete, voice dictation, real-time translation.
3. Whatever still works in airplane mode is on-device AI; whatever shows "connection required" is server-based AI — this maps out how much your phone can do on its own.
