Sovereign AI

AI that a country builds and controls using its own language, data, and infrastructure — "AI self-sufficiency." The idea grew out of concern that relying solely on US Big Tech AI leaves local language and culture unreflected, and creates security and economic dependency.

This is a central term in Korean AI policy. Efforts to secure national GPU capacity and support the development of Korean-language foundation models are proceeding under this banner, and France, Japan, and Middle Eastern countries are pursuing the same direction. It's also worth knowing that NVIDIA is both the biggest beneficiary and the leading evangelist of this trend — the irony that countries are buying up American-made GPUs in the name of "sovereignty" — which helps read the news with more depth.
