Type in a query and instead of ten blue links, you get an "answer" synthesized from multiple sources. Perplexity opened this genre, and Google followed by putting AI summaries at the top of its search results.
The convenience comes with industry-wide disruption — since readers get their answer and never click through to the publisher or blog, "vanishing traffic" and disputes over paying for content are recurring headlines in this space. Even when source links are attached, summaries sometimes distort the original text, so it's worth building the habit of opening the link for anything important.
Try it yourself
- Ask the same question in two places — a regular search engine and an AI Search tool (Perplexity, Google's AI mode, or a chatbot's search feature, whichever you like). Example: "eligibility requirements for EV subsidies"
- Compare the list of links against the synthesized answer — which was faster, and which felt more trustworthy?
- Open one of the source links from the AI Search answer and check it against the original text. Verifying whether the summary was accurate is the core literacy skill for the AI Search era.
