e/acc
The camp that says accelerating tech progress, not regulating or slowing it down, is the answer — the polar opposite of doomers in AI safety debates.
In plain words
Effective accelerationism, or e/acc for short, is the camp that believes "slowing down technological progress is the biggest risk of all, so let's build faster and solve problems along the way." It started around 2023 in Silicon Valley, half as a meme, and spread as a culture of appending "e/acc" to people's names on X (Twitter).
The logic goes like this: AI is the most powerful tool we have for solving problems like energy, disease, and poverty, so if regulation slows it down, the cost is paid in years those problems remain unsolved. That's why e/acc supporters back open-source releases, oppose regulation, and push for fast shipping.
Together with the doomer camp on the opposite end, they form the two poles of the AI debate. Most of the industry actually sits somewhere in between — when you see this term in an article, just read it as the "speed" end of the "safety vs. speed" debate.
How it shows up in the news
"The e/acc camp pushed back against the regulatory bill" — this is the typical way it shows up, as pushback commentary in news about AI regulation or safety mandates. It also frequently appears in the X bios of well-known investors and founders.
