Image generation AI turns sentences into pictures. Type "a cat riding a bike along the Han River at sunset, oil painting style," and seconds later, that image appears. Midjourney, DALL·E, Imagen, and Stable Diffusion are the leading names.

The underlying trick is "noise removal." Starting from random static like a fuzzy TV screen, the model gradually strips away the noise until an image matching the text emerges. This method is called diffusion, so when an article mentions a "diffusion-based" model, that's the family it belongs to.

Quality has jumped in just a few years, from the "six-finger meme" era to images now indistinguishable from photos, and the controversies have grown right along with it. Lawsuits from artists over copyright, the spread of fake images, mandatory watermarking — half of image AI news isn't about the technology itself but about these social debates.

"Model X now renders text accurately" — whether a model can correctly draw letters on signs or posters within an image is one of the standard benchmarks for image models.

1. Access ChatGPT (which has built-in image generation) or a Midjourney/Imagen-based service.
2. Try typing: "A street food cart in a rainy Seoul alley, neon lights, movie poster style."
3. Regenerate the same prompt but add "in watercolor style" or "as a miniature diorama" — notice how much a single style instruction changes the result.
