Token Maxxing

A token is both the unit that measures AI usage and the unit that determines cost. Token Maxxing refers to the practice of spending tokens without restraint, at maximum, to push output quality as high as possible. It comes from the internet meme "-maxxing," which describes going all-in on something, now attached to AI usage culture.

Behind this is a recent trait of AI: it tends to do better the longer it thinks. Give a reasoning model more time to think on the same question, run multiple agents in parallel, and have the results verify themselves — quality visibly rises, at the cost of using several to dozens of times more tokens. It's essentially a dial that converts money into performance.

Of course, it isn't a cure-all. Pouring tokens into simple tasks is wasteful, and this culture is part of the backdrop behind news stories about companies' surging AI costs. Knowing "where to spend your tokens" is becoming a new kind of skill.
