Luma AI is a company that trains its own models for generating video and 3D content. It was founded in the United States in 2021.

The naming can be confusing because there are several names involved. Dream Machine is the name of the consumer-facing product, while the model that actually generates video inside it is called Ray. Saying "made with Dream Machine" is correct, but calling it the "Dream Machine model" doesn't quite work.

Luma's models also show up inside other companies' products. For example, you can select Luma's video model within Adobe's Firefly app. The same pattern seen across the industry — the company that builds the model is separate from the many storefronts that sell access to it — shows up here too.

In August 2026, Luma added a new direction. It launched Luma Scenes, which lets users preview and approve a scene before it goes into full rendering, and in its agent product, it didn't stick only to its own models — it also integrated Chinese company MiniMax's video model, H3. Even a company that builds its own models now puts other companies' models on the shelf, which has become the standard setup in today's AI video landscape.
