Cursor

Cursor is an AI editor built for people who write code. It launched in 2022, taking editors developers already used and wiring AI deep into them.

What makes Cursor interesting is that it can't be neatly labeled one way or the other. Inside the app, you can pick between Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's GPT, and Google's Gemini, which makes it look like just a wrapper around other companies' models. But Cursor also trains and ships its own model, called Composer. It's simultaneously a company that borrows models and a company that builds them.

So when Cursor's blog posts something like "now supporting Grok," Grok isn't Cursor's own model. Composer is the only one Cursor built itself — everything else is someone else's model that Cursor has simply plugged in as an option.

In August 2026, the company's ownership changed. SpaceX acquired Cursor's developer, Anysphere, putting it under the same roof as xAI, the maker of Grok. That relationship is also why xAI's coding agent, Grok bot, runs inside Cursor early on. The CEO has said the company needs to "become a multi-product company," signaling a move away from being a single-editor business.

"Cursor added a new model" — this almost never means Cursor built that model itself. It usually means one more option was added to the lineup you can choose from.
