biuworks/bilibili-digest
A Chrome extension turns Bilibili videos into subtitle, summary, and note-taking study tools
biuworks/bilibili-digest is a Chrome extension that opens a sidebar next to Bilibili's video player, letting users read subtitles, generate AI chapter summaries with key quotes, get explanations for selected text, and take timestamped notes. It's a port of the earlier youtube-digest project, reusing its architecture and prompt templates for Bilibili's web player. The project is written in JavaScript and has 19 stars.
What it does
- Subtitles come directly from Bilibili's official API and can be viewed as original, translated, or bilingual side-by-side, with translation direction chosen automatically based on the subtitle track's language; an AI 'sentence smoothing' step adds punctuation and fixes homophone typos in AI-generated subtitles without changing wording or timing
- Long videos are split into overlapping chunks and processed in parallel to generate timestamped chapter summaries with highlighted key quotes, so partial failures don't lose completed sections and generation can be stopped or redone
- Selecting a term or concept in the subtitles triggers an AI explanation using surrounding context, shown as a floating popup; pressing a hotkey (n) while watching captures the current subtitle line as a timestamped note that the AI turns into a clean sentence
- Notes are saved per video and per part, can be edited, replayed, copied, or jumped to, and users can request AI-suggested refinements to manually edited notes before choosing to keep, replace, or append; notes can be exported as Markdown with timestamped links
- Available as the same codebase on both the Chrome Web Store and Microsoft Edge Add-ons (from browser version 116+), or can be built locally via npm and loaded as an unpacked extension in developer mode
Why it matters
Bilibili lacks built-in tools for subtitle translation, summarization, and note-taking, so this extension bundles those into one workflow to make foreign-language educational video content easier to digest. It's also a concrete example of adapting an existing open-source YouTube tool's architecture to a different video platform, useful for developers building similar browser extensions.
