Netflix has confirmed production of Dochabi, a Korean period action film from The Night Owl director Ahn Tae-jin. Kim Do-hoon and Jeon Jong-seo lead a cast that also includes Lee Joon-gi, Lee Sang-yi and Bae In-hyuk. The title uses an old Korean word for dokkaebi, the folkloric being often translated as goblin.
The story takes place near a border settlement of slash-and-burn farmers. Former military officer Tae-san hides deeper in the mountains with Jurchen woman Ahai until masked hunters begin targeting the villagers. As Tae-san fights the commander behind the violence, people start calling him Dochabi, shifting the name from feared creature to protective legend.
Kim Do-hoon plays Tae-san and Jeon Jong-seo plays Ahai, a fast and highly trained fighter who joins him. Lee Joon-gi takes the antagonist role of border commander Lee Do-gwan. Lee Sang-yi appears as inspector Park Se-ryong, while Bae In-hyuk plays Crown Prince Yeolhwa, a figure connected to the displaced villagers.
Ahn Tae-jin directs from a screenplay by Hwang Seong-gu, whose credits include The King's Case Note and Anarchist from Colony. Onda Works is producing. Netflix has not announced a release date, so the current news is about production, creative leads and cast rather than a completed launch window.
Dochabi's attraction is the way its action premise is tied to a name. The film can turn masks, rumor and border politics into the process by which an ordinary fighter becomes a supernatural-sounding story. Whether it reaches that scale will depend on the finished film, but the official outline establishes a clear terrain and an unusually physical ensemble.
