ByteDance Seed

The AI research organization within ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok. It built Seedance, the video model that Higgsfield and Krea use as their underlying material.

In plain words

ByteDance Seed is the AI research organization at ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. It builds several models, but the one that shows up most often in AI news is the video generation model Seedance.

The naming gets confusing because of where it appears. Seedance shows up inside video-making tools like Higgsfield or Krea as "a model you can pick." So you'll see headlines like "Higgsfield made a film with Seedance" — but the model was built by ByteDance, while the work made with that model came from Higgsfield. It's the difference between where the ingredients came from and which restaurant cooked the meal.

It's also worth separating from ByteDance the company itself. TikTok's recommendation algorithm and app features are the company's core business, while Seed is a separate research organization the company set up. Saying "an AI made by TikTok" is half right and half misleading — it wasn't built by the TikTok app, but by that app's parent company's research organization.

As of August 2026, the latest version is Seedance 2.5. With Higgsfield using it as material for animation and long-form work, it has become one of the standard building blocks for AI video studios.

How it shows up in the news

"Higgsfield released a short film made with Seedance 2.5" — the model that generated the video was built by ByteDance Seed, and the one that selected it and assembled it into a finished work was Higgsfield.
